Amazon.com Review
Cordless tools really come in handy when the job site is without power or when portability is a must. Skil has put together four of the most commonly used tools with the added bonus of a battery operated stud finder (batteries included) to complete this five tool kit. Included in the kit is a 7-1/4-inch circular saw with carbide tipped blade. The saw has a second ergonomically designed handle for added grip and safety. With both hands on the saw housing there's little chance of an accidental kickback if the blade should bind. There is an on-tool spindle wrench for changing the blade, a rearview depth gauge with large bold lettering and a safety lock guarded trigger to prevent accidental starts.p Next there is a 3/8-inch keyless chuck drill/driver. The Skil 2887-16 drill/driver has a two-speed gearbox that allows the user to shift from high-speed drilling to high torque for driving screws or bolts. The gear change lever is conveniently located on top of the tool housing next to the forward/reverse indicator light and just above the two-finger variable speed trigger. In addition to the built-in bit index and bit storage compartment on top of the housing there's a built-in work light at the base of the drill. A double-ended screw bit is stored on the side of the tool's base.pFor rough cutting the kit includes a reciprocating saw that has all the features required by skilled craftsmen and is especially useful in removing damaged building materials or tree limbs. The saw has an adjustable foot plate that keeps the tool secured to the work's surface, a rubber boot at the working end of the tool, a textured handle for comfort and control and a variable speed trigger. Depending on the products to be cut, the blade's speed can be adjusted to anywhere from 0 to 2800 strokes per minute. In addition there is a side mounted "orbit" switch, which allows the user to control the swing of the blade for more accurate cutting of various materials. The saw features a quick change E-Z lock spring-loaded blade attachment (no tools required to change blades), and an on-tool 2-blade storage compartment with two blades.pHow could you use all this power if there were no lights? Skil has packed in an 18-volt flashlight with an articulating head so that the light can be turned to shine in any direction in front of the light. The drill, saws and light can be powered by the two 18-volt batteries included in the kit. Each battery has a charge rate meter that lets the user know how much power is left. The batteries slide easily onto the bottom of the tools giving the tool bodies excellent balance. Also included in the kit are a one-hour quick charger, a handy battery operated stud finder and a sturdy canvas carrying bag. -- iC. Dwight Barnett/i

1 out of 5 stars NO SKIL IN THE QUALITY   April 29, 2010
PETE (Mechanicsville, MD)
bought this set for the price since the other higher quality combo kits were double or more the price. Seemed like a good idea until the batteries went south after 6 months. Currently after 1 year, both batteries are spent, and i will need to spend 90 dollars for 2 new batteries. Also are the new replacement batteries going to last or will i only get 6 months out of those also. br /The circular saw and recip saw will eat a battery up in under 10 minutes. Yes they were fully charged overnite. br /The drill will last maybe 20 to 30 min of light use.The chuck on the drill gets stuck on the drill bit of tip in it, so its very difficult to release sometimes i even had to use a pliers on it to hold and release. The batteries will often pop loose from the tool and either drop to the floor or stop the tool opeation mid cut. br /Theres a speed lever on the side of the recip saw to change the blade speed. Well put it to slow, operate the tool and instantly watch it vibrate to the fastest setting.I cant say to much about the circular saw since i would only get like 4 2X4 cuts out of it before the battery was dead, i pretty much back burnered it. br /All in all, these were very poor quaility and are not worth the money. br /Had i boughten a higher quailty kit, i would have still had the tools with no issues, or battery problems. br /Currenty after less than a years worth of homeowner use my tools are useless , unless i spent 90 dollars more for 2 batteries.

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed by Battery Performance   October 3, 2009
Mark Hornig (Menasha, WI USA)
I really wanted to like this kit. The tools themselves seem fairly well put together and sturdy for the price (don't expect pro-quality though)... But I am very disappointed with the battery performance--its far below the claimed abilities. Out of the box, with the driver I get the best performance, about 10 minutes of lightly-paced medium-duty use before its uselessly weak. And that's usually just short screws into soft wood. The worst performer is the reciprocating saw... I can't cut more than a half dozen boards before the blade comes to a pitiful winding down stop. The same for the circular and jig saws. A couple boards in and the blades just STOP. br / br /I really just do basic tasks around the house. The heaviest work I did was casually finishing my basement-- I was constantly switching between batteries and waiting for them to charge. Eventually I just gave up and got an extension cord for my old power tools... br / br /This package would have been an incredible value for what I paid if it weren't for better performance. I've only charged the batteries about two dozen times each so they aren't dead. Thinking I have a defective units, I even went so far as to buy a new battery separate. There was no improvement. It seems like as soon as I take them out of the charger and plug them in, the batter indicator is already at 2/3's... My last set was a similar 18V craftsman driver/saw combo I got almost 10 years ago. And in that time it appears the technology hasn't progressed any further. Hopefully the next generation of lithium batteries will perform better. But until then I'll just stick with the extension cord. br /

4 out of 5 stars Very nice products   May 11, 2009
Amy Hoff (Minneapolis, MN)
The combo pack has worked well so far. When I first got the product, I had trouble with the circular saw. It was the first power saw I've ever used, so people with more experience may not have had any problems. When I got the saw, I put the blade into the circular saw as the directions said (or so I thought), and then when I tried to cut through a 2x4, the blade would go in about 1/8" and then the blade would stop spinning. I called customer service and they told me the blade was too loose, and that I had to tighten it some more. I did that and now the saw works great. Like I said, it was a problem that only beginners would encounter. The other items in the pack work great, and are super easy to use. I can't wait to work on more projects! Compared to store prices, the combo pack was a great deal, too.

3 out of 5 stars ok for the price   February 26, 2009

I bought this kit 2 1/2 years ago when I needed to some home repairs to sell our house. The circular saw was not very powerful and would drain the battery very quickly. Then after about 3 months worth of use I had a very hard time detaching the battery from the saw. So once I finally got the battery to detach the circular saw has sat on the shelf ever since. The drill worked great for about 2 years but now seems that the clutch is slipping so replacing the drill. I still have jigsaw and flashlight and they are working fine. Battery does stick occassionaly on the jigsaw. I guess that I got my moneys worth out of it just hoped that it would last longer than 2 years before 2 of the pieces were broke. The drill is stull useable but have to stop every so often to reset the speed selector because it slips out of gear.
