We have slept with a sound machine in the bedroom ever since we lived next to a hideously ill-behaved family and their sad, ignored beagles. Both the humans and the beagles were noisy and disturbing at many points during each evening and night. When we moved to a new home after 1 year of neighboring with these people/animals we kept the sound machine in the room as we had grown used to the pleasant white noise. br /Having purchased many different types and brands of sound machines over the last 15 years, I can say that the Marpac Sound Conditioner is by far the best one ever. The sound it produces is like having a fan on in the room, without having the cold air chilling the room during freezing Michigan winters. The sound is not a recording like so many sound machines have. Sometimes those white noise recordings have an annoying audible loop noise that can be really irritating. Not so with the Marpac unit. It actually produces the white noise when you turn it on, and it is a lovely, soothing, relaxing white noise that cancels out any distracting or disturbing noises from the sleeping area. The Marpac 580A is fine for a average/smaller sized bedroom. I would recommend the Marpac 980A 2 speed unit for master bedrooms and larger sized sleeping areas.

Love this machine. I have it placed across the room from my bed and it gives plenty of noise. The noise is consistent, with slight adjustment in loudness. I had been using a humidifier for noise which was leaving dust and moisture all over my walls. This is a great mechanical noise without having to fill up water and change filters!

This is the premiere of sound machines. Creates very loud (if desired) yet pleasant white noise. Started out using in the baby's room, and now it is also a mainstay on all our trips. It is really great for hotels or cramped quarters with relatives/friends! We recently used on a trip with our friends; their toddler and dogs were one room over with very thin walls. Nothing woke us the whole night thanks to this sound machine. It's a little pricier than others out there but worth it for the quality. I have baby #2 on the way and have purchased a second unit for his bedroom.

We've been using these for years. Softens noises from outside like cars noisy neighbors, etc. We've tried some electronic noise machines but they became annoying b/c they are a sound sample that loops. You can actually hear the point that it starts over again. This is a soft continuous whir. Every bedroom in our house has one we have an extra for travel.
